PARKINSON, Carlene (née Player)

December 13, 1941 – May 21, 2026

Marie Carlene Faye Player was born in London, Ontario, just 5 days after Pearl Harbor. She often spoke of growing up during the war, an experience that shaped her deeply and fostered her lifelong commitment to peace. Her father was drafted during the Second World War and was absent during part of her early childhood, though he did not serve overseas.

Carlene began dating Jack at the age of 15, and they married in 1962. Their family grew quickly, with their first child arriving in 1963. Though she did not pursue post-secondary education, Carlene believed strongly in its value and always encouraged her children to do their best in school. She took great pride in her four children and her five talented granddaughters.

Carlene initially worked as a draftsperson for Bell Canada, a job that she adored. She left her career to raise her family and soon became an integral part of Parkinson Gun Shop. The store was founded by Jack’s father, Charles Parkinson, and Jack and Carlene inherited the business when he died in 1973. Carlene worked side by side with her husband until their retirement in 2002.

Carlene was passionate about so many things. She loved gardening, sewing—everything from quilts to clothing—knitting, fine embroidery, and reading. She also adored cats, and over the years many feline companions enjoyed her care. Her current cat, Leo, will miss the constant affection she gave him.

Faith was central to Carlene’s life. She was a devout Catholic and a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites and dedicated herself to service. She volunteered in many ways, including with the Catholic Women’s League, Bible study, floral arranging, and as a communion minister. Her needlework skills were generously shared with her parish, where she made vestments, altar cloths, and purificators. In her earlier years, she also volunteered with Hospice. Her generosity and compassion touched many lives.

After retirement, Carlene and Jack traveled extensively and enjoyed exploring the world together. In later years, declining health and the challenges of COVID limited her travel, but she remained connected with family and friends through her computer and phone. She was a thoughtful listener and, despite her health, remained active with knitting and sewing. Her faith remained strong, and she continued to pray the rosary until the end.

In April 2026, Carlene and Jack moved to Ajax. Shortly afterward, Carlene was admitted to Lakeridge Health Ajax, where she received exceptional care in her final days. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the hospital staff, as well as to Father Dominic Borg for his many years of friendship and spiritual guidance.

Carlene was predeceased by her parents, Bill and Marjorie Player, and her younger brother, Bill Player. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jack Parkinson, and their four children: Lillian, Jack (Hanna Ho), Carlene (Andre Paquette), and Ted (Julie Soave). She also leaves behind five cherished granddaughters: Laura, Dora, Alena, Alexa and Jenna. She will also be missed by her niece Sherri, nephew Bill and sister-in-law Beverly Player.

Carlene has been cremated. Due to Jack’s health, there will be no funeral or celebration of life.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Carmel of the Infant Jesus (www.myvocationislove.ca/en/home/) or the World Central Kitchen (donate.wck.org).
