Obituary

In Loving Memory of John Martin
August 13, 1950 – August 25, 2026

John passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, surrounded by family after a very short illness.

John was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, on August 13, 1950. He was a loving husband to his wife, Geeta Martin (Pershad), and the son of the late Hilston S. Martin and the late Evelyn Martin (Derrah) of Bedford, Nova Scotia.

He was the loving brother of the late Rhonda Lawton (Fred) of Saint John, New Brunswick; Hal Martin (Ella) of Mattawa, Ontario; the late Garth Martin (Lynda Guglick); and Jan Conrod (Mark) of Bedford, Nova Scotia.

John will be dearly missed by his nephew, Greg Lawton, and niece, Rhonda Lee Curran (Dave), along with his extended cousins, Marilyn Bajunry, Joanne Thompson (David), and Lori Millie, with whom he shared countless wonderful memories over the years.

John will also be deeply missed by his many dear friends, particularly his long-time best friends Fred Whelpley and Dr. Bob Webb of Saint John, New Brunswick; George Baycetich of Brantford, Ontario; and Vincent McEwan of Toronto, Ontario.

John held a very special place in his heart for his wife’s family. He became an integral part of the family, growing to know and love them and being loved in return.

John graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1972 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. He began his professional career as a Chartered Accountant, working with several companies in Toronto, most notably within the media industry. He later transitioned to the financial and brokerage sector, where he developed extensive knowledge and expertise in the Stock Transfer business.

John took the entrepreneurial step of establishing his own business as a Stock Transfer Agent. He built a successful business over the course of 30 years before retiring in 2025. His professional life was marked by intelligence, determination, independence, and an impressive depth of knowledge in his field.

John had a love of all sports. He was an avid skier, hockey player, and baseball player. John loved golf and was a long-time member of Donalda Club. Golf was much more than a sport for him; it was a treasured opportunity to spend time with friends and family. Those Saturday morning golf outings became an important tradition filled with friendship, laughter, competition, and many wonderful memories.

Music was another great passion. John particularly loved classic rock and had an extraordinary interest in the quality and character of sound. He enjoyed identifying the different “sounds” and had a keen fascination with speakers and audio equipment. He could explain the subtleties of sound in music and movies and was always happy to share his knowledge with others.

John also had a passion for making homemade beers. He took pride in experimenting with different varieties, and those fortunate enough to sample his creations were often quick to praise them.

John will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit. He treasured the time he spent with his family and friends and valued the relationships he built throughout his life.

John had great faith in modern medicine and was deeply appreciative of the physicians, nurses, care teams, and support staff who cared for him. Despite the efforts of his medical team and the loving presence of his family, he was unable to recover from his illness.

John’s life was defined not only by his professional accomplishments, but also by the friendships he cultivated, the family he loved, the interests that brought him joy, and the many lives he touched. He will be profoundly missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
