Obituary of Lothar Gehring

“Don’t be sad that it’s over; be grateful that it happened.”

With much love and sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved dad, Bub, Opa, and husband, Lothar Gehring, on February 3, 2026, at the age of 89, in his 90th year.

He is survived and deeply missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Anna (née Eisenmann); his children Thomas Gehring (Linda), Doris Taxis (Tim), and Lora Gehring-Walsh (Dave); and his cherished grandchildren Jessica Taxis, Matthew Gehring, Sylvia Gehring, and Trent Taxis. He is also survived by brothers and sisters in Germany, as well as many nieces and nephews, who remain close in heart despite the distance. He will also be fondly remembered by the many friends whose lives he touched with his kindness.

The second oldest of seven children born to Franz and Edwina Gehring, Lothar grew up on a farm in the village of Schönwald, in Germany’s Black Forest region. A skilled tool and die maker, he immigrated to Canada in 1958, arriving in Montréal. After returning to Germany to marry Anna (née Eisenmann) on March 2, 1961, the two embarked on a lifelong adventure together in Canada, where they built their home and raised their family.

Lothar and Anna shared a love of camping, travel, and entertaining their large circle of friends. Many fond memories were made playing cards and darts together while enjoying a beer and schnapps at their Toronto home. Lothar’s career as a tool and die maker was his true passion; he worked his way up to the position of Manager, generously sharing his knowledge and mentoring others along the way. In his free time, he delighted in designing and building his many innovations—whether at the cottage or in his home workshop, the Werkstatt. He had a quiet kindness and was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Lothar’s “happy place” was his cottage in Magnetawan, the Hütte, where he enjoyed walks in the forest with family and friends, exploring trails on his ATV, cutting firewood, and planting wildflower seeds for the bees.

Lothar’s calm, gentle, and balanced nature made him a truly special friend and companion to many. What remains with us are the countless cherished memories we will hold close for the rest of our lives. We miss you, Bub.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
