Obituary

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

DAVID ERIC CAWTHORNE

November 25, 1950 - May 2, 2026

David Cawthorne passed away in the early morning hours on May 2, 2026 at Iler Lodge Long Term Care Nursing Home in Essex, Ontario where he resided for several years. He was 75 years of age.

David is lovingly remembered by his cousin, Dianne (Donnie) Smith of Satsuma, Florida, Jo-Anne Jacques of Essex, Ontario and John Schumacher of Essex, Ontario. David was predeceased by his parents, Eric and Mabel Cawthorne, his sister, Carol Cawthorne along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews.

David was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. At the young age of 12, his parents passed away, 4 months apart, and he was then raised by his aunt, Lil Bain. David had several jobs until he became a Purolator truck driver which he loved and worked there until his retirement.

David loved talking to people and loved to tell jokes. He had a great sense of humour. He always had a book with him. He often talked about his life when he was younger. He wanted to travel but knew he couldn't once he was residing in the nursing home. He often talked about the fond memories of all his pets. He really missed them.

David is extremely missed by his loving cousin, Dianne Smith. Dianne took it upon herself from Florida to have him buried with his beloved parents in Toronto even though he has already been reunited with them as well as his sister, Carol, in Heaven. Dianne remembers all the good times she had with David over the years when they both lived in Toronto but the best times were when Donnie and Dianne visited him from Florida and they went to Niagara Falls and other places. David visited them twice in Florida, once at Christmas time and once when he visited them for two weeks and they went to Daytona Beach for a weekend where they stayed in a hotel sharing the same room with a private balcony right on the ocean which David really enjoyed.

David always wanted to come back for a visit when he was in the nursing home but it never came to light.

David is also sadly missed by his new family...John, Jo-Anne, Timbit and Oreo. The two dogs both still run to the gate when they hear a noise expecting to see David as he loved dogs and loved to visit them. John and Jo-Anne were touched when David asked them if he could adopt them as his new cousins. Of course they said yes. John and Jo-Anne still expect to see David when they look out of their window since they live right across the road from the nursing home that David resided in. Jo-Anne often bought him certain groceries that he wouldn't get at the nursing home and often took him over a hot home cooked meal which he appreciated very much.

Dianne will cherish his visits, phone calls and memories since they were both so very close.

A private graveside service was held at Pine Hills Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario.
