Cedric James
Smith
August 3, 1934 – March 12, 2026
Cedric James Smith, August 3rd, 1934 – March 12th, 2026 Obituary It is with deepest sadness we announce the sudden death of Cedric Smith on March 12th, 2026, at the age of 91. Cedric was the beloved husband of Diane, his wife of 61 years. His family was the centre of his life. A devoted and loving husband and father, he was most proud of his daughters Kerstin (Alan) and Danielle, and he cherished his grandchildren, Nathaniel, Miranda, Isabelle, and Ava. As well, his love for extended family was vast, including Sister-in-Law Sheila (Ken), Nieces and Nephews in the U.K., Canada, and further abroad, and the Rowe Family (Eddy, Lesley, Barry and children).
Cedric was a proud Canadian, Brit, and Anglo-Indian, born in 1934 to Indian parents of mixed British ancestry in Karachi, British India. He was educated at Vincent Hill School, Mussoorie, and Karachi Grammar School in India before emigrating to the U.K. at 19 years old. Cedric signed on for National Service and enjoyed being stationed in Hong Kong for two years with the RAF between 1954-56. When he returned to the U.K., Cedric continued his education, resulting in qualifications as a Professional Mechanical Engineer.
After meeting the love of his life, Diane, in London, England in 1962, Cedric and Diane married and emigrated to Toronto, Canada together to begin their family. Cedric’s career revolved around his work for the City of Toronto/Scarborough, mentoring others along the way and sharing his love for engineering by teaching students at various colleges. During this time, Cedric was the President of ASHRAE’s Toronto chapter, as well as an OACETT Fellow and recipient of the Lifetime Membership Award. He continued to engage with his peers throughout his retirement, who remained close friends.
Cedric loved sport, and the more competitive the better. He remained incredibly fit throughout his life by playing squash, golf, swimming, and tennis, and was an avid volunteer for over 20 years at Tennis Canada.
Cedric approached every day and every person he encountered in his life with joy, humour, compassion, and open arms. He will be deeply missed by his family, so many friends, and acquaintances whose lives he blessed in so many ways.
In keeping with Cedric’s wishes, a private cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Cedric’s life will occur at a later date. Cedric was a staunch supporter of a multitude of charities, so if you would like to contribute to a charity in his name, please feel free to choose the one that touches your own heart.
